Well, it is the Fall season and one of the shows I have been most looking forward to is here: Golden Time. Based on a light novel series from the pen of the author of Toradora!, this anime is off to a great start. I have my reviews of the first two episodes up now and will try to get the episode 3 review up this weekend. The story revolves around Tada Banri, a first year Law Student (though he didn't make it there right out of high school) living on his own and in Tokyo for the first time. He has some other... interesting personality traits, but those are not revealed in the anime until episode 3, so I will keep mum. (In the light novels, it is talked about at the beginning of chapter 1.) The other main character is Kouko Kaga. She is, in short, the perfectly beautiful yet massively flawed BEST CHARACTER FROM A LIGHT NOVEL SERIES THIS SIDE OF HOLO! She is my favorite character in recent years. Her main hook in the early going is that she is the "irrational childhood bride" to Banri's first friend that he meets at college: Yana-san (or Mitsuo, depending on who is talking about or to him). Yana-san entered this university in an attempt to escape Kouko. Kouko didn't let that happen. The fact that she starts as an archetype that I actually dislike greatly and is one of my all-time favorite characters should tell you something about how well written she is...
The only other series I am currently blogging is Galilei Donna. This is an anime original story airing on the noitaminA block, so it is only going to be 11 episodes. So far it is a fantastic show. I may even like it better than Golden Time, which is pretty hard, since I absolutely love Golden Time, or, more specifically, Kouko Kaga, the main female character... The story revolves around three very different sisters who are descendants of the father of modern science: Galileo Galilei. The Ferrari sisters, Hazuki - a failing law student, Kazuki - a kind of emo high school martial arts expert, and Hozuki - a middle-school aged hyper genius. The three sisters are targeted by kidnappers at the beginning of the story and the bad guys are after "Galileo's inheritance" which none of the family seem to know about.
Anyway, you can read my Galilei Donna reviews here. I hope to have the episode 2 review up soon...
Other shows I'm considering adding in blocks:
Strike the Blood - an ecchi, action, school, vampire fantasy that is better so far than it has any right to be. It is based on a light novel series, so that may explain why it seems to have a bit more meat to the story.
Nagi no Asukara - an anime original by PA Works... I really could stop there and I would consider that an adequate reason to watch it! PA Works scenery porn with an original story instead of an adaptation. (They seem to be better at originals for some reason, unlike the studio doing the next show I'm going to mention, who is better at adaptations.) However, the story so far seems really good, the characters are ok, but the real star is the world and the art. Four of the main characters live under water and attend school on land, to give you an idea. It is breathtaking to watch.
Kyoukai no Kanata (Beyond the Boundary) - This Kyoto Animation adaptation of a light novel series published by Kyoto Animation (after winning an award from them to win publication) is a sight to behold! With fluid animation, plenty of action, and moe beyond belief characters, it is a winning combination. Add to it the fact that the story seems to be pretty good, the dialog is fairly witty, and the character dynamics are pretty complex at this point and you get a winning combination. I was kind of surprised that several people really didn't like the dialog in the first episode. My son and I were really impressed, but that may be because the character talk like we do, and like our friends do. In short, they tend to over think things, use longer words than most people, prefer sarcasm as a primary method of communication, and are basically a group of pedantic geeks... What's not to like?
